I don’t know why I hadn’t realized Dali had done a deck. Now I need that one too. I have quite a collection. One not mentioned here that is an important original woodcut set that goes back centuries is the Tarot de Marseilles. They still print it on an old press wrapping deck in handmade paper and box, in limited editions. Joseph Maxwell wrote an entire divination book using numerology about it. Modern playing cards are largely from this deck.

I’ve known Dali did a deck, but I haven’t added it to my collection yet. Maybe next year! I definitely need to get the Maxwell book too. It sounds like the perfect companion to the Tarot de Marseilles, especially with how he ties numerology into the divination process. It’s always exciting to explore the deeper layers of symbolism behind the cards.

Before they were called Huguenots…

In a large way, The Chronicler of the Veil series is very much based upon this history. Where to store the Truths? The sacred texts? How to inscribe a code into something that looks harmless? In the guise of a Game, perhaps?

Gardner. Check his work. It’s all footnoted. So the beginning of the sleuthing is validated there. And while they choose to refer to him as a ‘pseudo’ historian, if you follow his path of fact finding you see it’s only considered so because it’s inconvenient for the storytelling victors. Actual History IS inconvenient. So we find ourselves still.

The transference of ‘mysticisms’ which are basically philosophies on how to be good human beings on this planet and how to become self actualized became anathema to the system of control desired. So it follows logically that how they were hidden and where is not recorded in the conventional sense. I have many texts connecting the dots.

So I have a slightly different take on the order of how gaming cards and tarot emerged. I realize it’s not in keeping with written history. But remember history is white washed by the victors.

It’s a bit longer conversation. It has to do with The Grail. Or shall I say Sangreal. It has to do with the Roman’s chasing the Huguenots across the south of Europe. It has to do with Christian holidays being aligned with pagan ones.

I’ve heard bits and pieces of this theory before, particularly the connection to the Grail and the alignment of Christian holidays with pagan ones, but not the part about the Romans chasing the Huguenots. I couldn’t find anything about that in my own research, though I’ll try digging further. I’d always thought Rome had fallen by then, which makes this even more intriguing. I'm going to have to hit the library again in the new year!
