This took me back to my school days. I was so fortunate to have an Eastern Master come to our school for a semester. It changed how I hold the brush, load it, how I handle pigment, handle composition. It taught me how to know how little to do. When to stop.

I recommend for anyone interested in narrowing their discipline and technique to follow through with testing the examples of styles and methods here in this written piece. They may seem distant, from a far away place. Yet they are very human, and perhaps more aesthetic than anything we ever did in the west.

That sounds like such an amazing experience!!!! Having a Master teach you must have been life-changing. It’s amazing to me how something as simple as how you hold the brush can totally change the way you approach your art. The idea of knowing when to stop really hits….sometimes less is more, right?

I completely agree with you. Eastern art might seem distant at first, but there’s such a raw, human quality to it that’s just different from Western styles. It’s all about the space, the feeling, and the simplicity. Definitely worth diving into and experimenting with for anyone looking to mix up their technique.

It also felt a little grimy to me when they started bringing in western influence and training as you point it out. Why spoil perfection? But I guess similar to my experience of cross-over, they must also have taken something positive away as well.

Yes, I feel that too, kind of like MacDonalds...but like Macdonalds I can understand wanting to try something new. I still hate the sense that somehow stuff from Europe and America was seen to be somehow 'better'. For me it's a kind of colonial brow beating but to be fair perhaps that's more India, at least directly.
