Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) revolutionized modern art through his radical distillation of form and color, pioneering Neo-Plasticism and laying a foundation for generations of artists, architects, and designers.
One of my favorite all-time artists. When people knock modern art, I refer them to Mondrian's early work. He was a fascinating artist and thinker. Lovely post as always!!
I immediately want to know more about how this happens: “Victory Boogie Woogie, posthumously completed”
Do you have more information on who it was who did it and in what state/how it was found? It seems it would be a contradiction when it becomes credited with being his most complete movement in the genre which of course, as his last work, would not necessarily be so if it weren’t complete… a puzzle of a different kind.
Totally fair point. I only cited Wikipedia because that’s where I grabbed the image….though, that’s kind of the issue with Wikipedia….anyone can update it, so details like that can be inconsistent. Both the Kunstmuseum and SingularArt say Victory Boogie Woogie was Mondrian’s last, unfinished painting, completed (?) in 1944….so it seems they consider it finished enough to count, especially since it was sold in that state.
What’s interesting is that no one actually finished it after his death. It was found in his studio with bits of tape he used to plan the composition, which gives us insight into what he intended. So it’s kind of a paradox….technically unfinished, but still seen as the culmination of his style. A different kind of puzzle, for sure.
Fantastic read once again. 🖤
So happy that you enjoyed!

Well I didn’t get to twist your arm today in Art Chat today 🤗
You were missed, though it was a very quiet afternoon. I expect it to be the same tomorrow.
