Love this piece, especially the native american influenced in the firstbpart and the later rile of the Ashcan school some favorites there. Recently talked about Philip Evergood with a friend, where he fit. New York school post Ash Can? Like Alice Neel…

Thank you so much!

The Ashcan artists (Henri, Bellows, Sloan, Shinn, Luks, Glackens) were so pivotal in capturing the grit and humanity of early 20th-century, and it’s interesting to trace their legacy forward. Evergood is a compelling figure. He definitely bridges that post-Ashcan, pre-Abstract Expressionist space, blending social realism with a surreal, emotional edge. And yes, like Neel, he never strayed from the deeply personal and political. Both of them carved a lane outside the dominant narratives, which is why they are still today.

Yes! Reginald Marsh is another “kettel of fish?” Popular in his time, very New York but his edge in paintings seems dated (to my taste). I do like the etchings of “girlie” stage shows.
