Interesting piece! I would never have known, not being a comic person.

So here I am learning as I go on and the shock of death with breasts image hit me in a way unexpected. I have a real push back on it—a horrific thought for the milk of life to be adorning the body of death?

Was there anything about that in any of the research?

The contrast between life-giving imagery and death is definitely unsettling, and I think that tension is part of what makes Lady Death so striking. While my research didn’t uncover direct commentary on that specific contradiction, it's impossible to ignore how comics (especially Marvel) have historically leaned into highly sexualized portrayals of women, even in characters embodying concepts as grim as death.

In some ways, it feels like a reflection of broader cultural anxieties....turning death into something seductive, perhaps to make it less terrifying, or reinforcing the femme fatale archetype where beauty and danger are intertwined. It’s frustrating how often women’s bodies are used as a vehicle for these extremes....whether as nurturing figures or as objects of desire, even in death.
